Queen Mother Champion Chase Top Trainers
The top trainers of this great race have trained horses who have or who will become Queen Mother Chase legends as well as National Hunt racing legends. Those selected for the spotlight range from the great Tom Dreaper to the upcoming trainer, Alan King.
- Tom Dreaper - Tom saddled the winner of this race no less than six times and as yet there has not been another trainer who has got close to that feat. He won in 1960 and 1961 with Fortria, ridden by Pat Taafe, that double was followed up in 1964, when Ben Stack got home, again with Taafe aboard. His fourth win came in 1965, when Pat Taafe once again rode the great Flyingbolt to victory at record odds. In 1969 he won yet again with Muir, this time with Ben Hannon in the saddle and he rounded off the following year with another Pat Taafe victory, this time on board Straight Fort.
- Alan King - Alan King has a reputation that grows each year. The former assistant to David Nicholson, clearly learned his trade under him and has set out his stall in a similar vein. Having won this race 2 years ago, see 2007 Result, with Voy Por Ustedes, King followed that up by winning the Champion Hurdle in 2008 with, Katchit. Unfortunately, Voy Por Ustedes, met last year's winner, Master Minded, on a day when he was unbeatable. He came second, but was an incredible 19 lengths behind the winner in second place. King has entered him again this year clearly unafraid and with the belief that Voy Par Ustedes can win it for the second time. It is interesting to note that King's horses usually come to their own at this time of year.
- Paul Nicholls - Probably the most respected National Hunt trainer today. Nicholls comes to this race, hoping that Master Minded and Ruby Walsh can repeat their success of the ppast two years, 2008 result, and give the trainer his fifth win in the race. He has won previously with Azertyioup in 2004 with Ruby Walsh in the saddle and prior to that he won with Call Equiname with the recently retired Mick Fitzgerald on board.
- Jessica Harrington - Twice a winner here with the fabulous Queen Mother Champion Chase Legend, Moscow Flyer. The horse won in 2003, but when attempting to win the following year, he shocked everyone by unseating rider, Barry Geraghty. As game as ever however, Moscow Flyer came back in 2005 to win for the second time. It was a great trainer feat. His last race was a charity Flat race at the 2007 Punchestown Festival, where he was ridden to victory by Jessica’s daughter. In total Moscow Flyer won 27 races and earned over £1 million.
